Read This Too Part Before Reading Anything Else *IMPORTANT*

This guide with serve as a board guide too serve a lot of people. So instead of telling you the conservative colors and stopping there we are going on a deep dive because these colors can hurt you in certain situation. Wearing a black suit to a interview at a bank in Boston may be a good idea. But wearing a black suit to a online fin tech bank in California is a bad choice and when you add your age it gets a little more complicated. So I’m going to break down the important areas you need to look at when deciding and you can pick for yourself.

Things To Consider

1.Job Location

2.Industry

3.Position

4.Age

1.Job Location

Similar to the example I give above where you are located plays a huge role. If you are in a conversative place like Massachusetts Alabama or republican state then the the conservative color will do well.

Why because you are interviewing with another human being not a computer algorithm (well I hope not) and your goal is to get them too like you enough to win the job.

If the state or area is conversative and republican more than likely the people are also. That’s why they pick them as the leaders we as humans like to be around people that are just like us in a way. An you want the interviewer to see you as part of the group already.

2.Industry

The industry you are in is another great thing to base your decision on. If you are in Austin Texas (Austin a young in hip city) going for a interview at a tech company you want to wear colors that express your personality. More than likely the people that work in hip fast place tech companies are very liberal and expressive.

Even if you are conservative by nature. This environment is not and you should probably try to add a little bit of flavor to your colors. Something like a black suit with a white dress and tie. This will not work in this environment and probably result in the company going with another candidate that express their values.

Always remember your goal is to dress like the environment around you. Hip city tech companies dont wear conversative bank black suit don’t go dressing like you  are interviewing to guard the president in the secret services.

But if you are going to a interview for a South Carolina insurance company.A conversative state and a conversative industry you don’t want to wear a colorful grey suit with a pink dress shirt(which looks good in my opinion) this is a bad choice. Wrong time to wear those colors

To sum this up understanding the industry is very important. Dress in the appropriate color to fit the people around you.

3.Position

Another important thing to consider is position you are going for. If you are going for a senior level position you should dress more serious and put together even if the company is a relax and out growing company. Certain colors like the conservatives should probably be your choice. Depending on the season I’ll switch up the tone so instead of a navy suit I’ll go with a royal lighter blue instead. Has a leader you want to always be seen a stronger authority figure. Its a reason all police departments wear blues and black even in sunny places.

But if you going to a position that’s not manager or senior this cant be less important just don’t wear a pinstripe suit for a job interview for a cashier that will be odd.

4.Age

Have you ever heard the saying “dress your age” well this is not always the best advice for job interviews. See if you are a young person and you’re going for a interview and its a management position don’t wear colors that makes you look young. For example avoid the purple and orange ties. Bright colors are sometimes associate with younger people and going for a management position this can work against you. Considering most manager are thought to be older and wise.

What you want to do instead is wear double conversative colors like navy suit dark red tie. These colors helps you look older and more mature.

On the flip slide if you are older and going for a interview with a more younger industry like tech you dont want to appear like the old guy. An easy way to get around this is wear colors that makes you look younger. For example if you wore a light grey suit with a orange tie the brighter colors will send a signal saying you are a trendy person and up too date. Which is the opposite on a older person. An industries like tech being update is a must.

Remember like I said earlier the point here is too look like the people in the company so they think you are a perfect fit for the company and culture. The answer to this article is not black or white, yes or no. Take the consider above think about the environment of the company and make a decision from there. What do you need to look like to blend in and make the person doing the interview think you are a good fit. That’s your answer to what color you should wear.
